Before you choose your car hire, the large international companies are sometimes a little bit more expensive, but offer very low mileage cars and have extensive support facilities. The smaller local companies offer slightly older cars at lower prices, and may only have a limited service network.
We would always recommend "Air Conditioning" (The weather is always warm) and "Full Accident Damage Waiver". (the Portuguese are wonderful mild mannered people until they have a steering wheel in front of them, .... the last bit is mainly a joke but we still have a lot of very narrow country roads and the surfaces can be a little bit poor. Most of the best places to see will probably take you along a dirt track road)
